Tips and tricks

1- INTRODUCTION

The electric scooter is becoming more and more an indispensable alternative for your short journeys. This individual means of transport also allows you to approach mobility in a completely different way and will allow you to move easily around the city. You will easily avoid traffic jams and avoid possible strikes on public transport.

In this period of Corona virus, is an important part of the solution. As an individual means of transport, it is completely hygienic if the vehicle does not come from a shared fleet. A not so negligible advantage.

New means of transport also raises many questions. Where can you ride an electric scooter, and how fast? What are the mandatory protections and what offences do you risk if you do not comply with the law? My-eScooter tries to answer the most common questions about the use of electric scooters and gives you an overview of the legislation regarding our preferred mode of transportation.

2- WHERE TO RIDE IN AN ELECTRIFIED SCOOTER

As a general rule, and above 6km/h, the electric scooter must travel on the bike paths, if there are any. If a bike path is missing, the electric scooter can travel on the road (where the maximum speed allowed is 50 km/h), but only in built up areas.. Beware, some roads are reserved only for cars: the tunnels in Brussels or other cities are, for example, totally forbidden to scooters.

When the scooter does not exceed the pace of the step (6km/h), the user can ride on the sidewalks. On sidewalks and pedestrian areas, scooters should ensure that passers-by are not in a user’s way.

If the law has not provided for all cases of figures, the key word remains your “common sense”;-)

3- HOW FAST DOES ONE TRAVEL ON AN ELECTRIC SCOOTER?

When travelling on a road, you should never exceed 25 km/h (WARNING: scooters capable of exceeding 25km/h are normally prohibited and should be registered and registered).). If you use a pedestrian area or sidewalk, you must limit your speed to a moderate speed, close to walking, i.e. 6 km/h. You must not disturb pedestrians.

4- WHAT PROTECTIONS FOR THE ELECTRIC SCOOTER?

By day, the legislation does not require a protective port, such as helmets. At My-eScooter we strongly advise you to equip yourself with a helmet. Remember that you might be vulnerable in the event of a fall… and you only have one head…

It is also not mandatory to wear knee pads, elbow pads or other gloves. But in case of a fall, again, these accessories do come in handy;-)

If you are travelling at night or if there is insufficient visibility (visibility within 200m) you must turn on your lights in the front and rear. If your scooter does not have one, you must provide a white (front) and red (back) taillight that you can place on a garment or backpack, for example.

With My-eScooter, forget about these worries. Our scooters are all equipped with LED headlights front and rear!

5- CAN YOU RIDE AT NIGHT ON AN ELECTRIC SCOOTER?

It is quite permissible to ride at night with an electric scooter. The only condition is that you must have a front light (white) and a rear taillight (red).

Today, although these “options” are present in the majority of cases, electric scooters are not required to be equipped with front-to-rear lights, a sound alarm and retro-reflective devices. If your scooter doesn’t have one, you must provide a white (front) and red (back) light that you can place on a garment or backpack for example

With My-eScooter, forget about these worries. Our scooters are all equipped with LED headlights and rear taillights!

6- AT WHAT AGE CAN YOU USE AN ELECTRIC SCOOTER?

As bizarre as it may seem, the law did not provide for a minimum age…. Be careful though if you want to use shared electric scooters. In this case, you will need to follow the terms of use of this provider.

However, we recommend a minimum age of 12 for such a device. We believe that at this age, the user will have the maturity, reflexes, and anticipation necessary for safe driving.

7- CAN WE HAVE A PASSENGER ON AN ELECTRIC SCOOTER?

It is forbidden to carry a passenger on an electric scooter. You can get verbalized. Consider the fact that being two on such a small space can really put you in danger. law enforcement if not

8- DO YOU NEED INSURANCE FOR THE ELECTRIC SCOOTER?

Again, surprise! There is no obligation to possess insurance. Take – however, into account, that as a road user, you could:

  • Hurting you
  • Injuring someone
  • Have property damage on your scooter
  • Causing property damage to others

Under such conditions, we can only recommend a subscription to a liability insurance,or RC. This will only protect you in the event of an accident.

9- WHERE CAN ONE PARK THE ESCOOTER?

An essential rule to follow when parking your scooter: do not disturb pedestrians or other road users.. You can park your scooter on the sidewalks, but have a civic sense: don’t place them across sidewalks;-) There are also more and more locations dedicated to our scooters. Don’t hesitate to use them. .

10- WHAT TIPS AND ADVICE

Now that you know the main rules to adopt, let’s finish with some tips;-)

Although many models at My-eScooter are equipped with disc brakes, your scooter doesn’t brake as well as a motorized two-wheeler or a car. Travelling at 25 km/h, remember that it will take some time to stop, especially on slippery or wet ground. To avoid accidents, moderate your speed.

Generally, your scooter does not have indicators (only certain models have them),and other users do not know your intentions: start to indicate the direction you intend to take.. A simple gesture of the arm or hand, and after controlling what is happening behind you, will allow you to ride safely.

You do not have a driver’s license, but you must know the traffic code, otherwise you will be verbalized for any offence. So don’t hesitate to revise rules. There are many websites offering exercises and simulations.

On the cycling streets, an electric scooter has the same rights and obligations as cyclists. so you can, for example, use a NO ENTRY if signage allows it.

Even if you are in a hurry, it is forbidden to ride a scooter in stations and other public buildings

Riding under the influence of alcohol is obviously forbidden. You are subject to the same rules as all other drivers (no more than 0.5 grams of alcohol in the blood)

For your safety, remember that it is also forbidden to use your smartphone during your journey

Your scooter is silent, and other users may not hear you. So anticipate as much as possible the actions of others…

If they are not banned, headphones or headphones are a danger to you. If you turn up the sound too high, you won’t hear the other vehicles coming. Be reasonable and attentive.

Enjoy your ride, enjoy your eScooter!
